What is cholesterol?

Fats are also called lipids that serve as a major source of fuel for the body’s metabolic processes. Fats are obtained from food or formed in the body, mostly in the liver, and can be stored in fat cells for future use. Fats are essential components of cell membranes, of the myelin sheaths that surround nerve cells, and of bile. The two major fats in the blood are cholesterol and triglyceride.

The fats attach themselves to certain proteins so they can travel throughout the bloodstream; the combined fats and proteins are called lipoproteins. The major lipoproteins are chylomicrons, very low density lipoproteins ( VLDL ), low-density lipoproteins ( LDL ), and high-density liporoteins ( HDL ). HDL is the good cholesterol while LDL cholesterol is called the bad cholesterol. A sample diet for lowering cholesterol includes methods of increasing HDL levels.

What are healthy levels of cholesterol?

You need to know what healthy levels of cholesterol are so when you check yourself or a doctor does it, then you know if that sample diet for lowering cholesterol is working. Your total blood cholesterol level will fall into one of these categories.

Desirable- Less than 200 mg/dl

Borderline high risk- 200 to 239 mg/dl

High risk- 240 mg/dl and over

What is a good sample diet for lowering cholesterol?

· Eating psyllium husk which is a dietary fiber from plantago ovata. This dietary fiber helps to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood lipid levels.

· Consuming DHA which is an omega-3 fatty acid made from another fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid ( ALA ). ALA is found predominately in flaxseed oil also known as linseed and hemp seed oil.

· EPA is another omega-3 fatty acid along with DHA. They are both found in seafood, salmon, stripped bass, rainbow trout. Both DHA and EPA may possibly lower your risk for heart disease.

· Sytrinol- which has polymethoxylated flavones ( PMFs ) that decrease apoprotein B, a structural protein needed for endogenous synthesis of LDL cholesterol. Anyways Sytrinol is found in oranges, tangerines, and palm fruit extracts. Sytrinol may help to maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range. A sample diet for lowering cholesterol can consist of psyllium husk, fish and oranges, to name a few.
