OCULAR MIGRAINES INFO

OCULAR MIGRAINES

I know of several people who have been afflicted with ocular migraines or (OM). I wanted to shed some light on this particular subject because of its effects on visual acuity. In this section, I will define, provide symptoms of and reveal what to do if you have this throbbing pain.

What is this throbbing pain?

Visual disturbances can arise with or without headache pain. These visual problems associated with migraines can be labeled as ophthalmic migraines, but are called more commonly by the name ocular migraines. Migraines can possibly be produced by the body’s neurological responses to certain triggers such as flashing lights, or chemicals in foods or medications and hormonal changes. One of these triggers can lead to a migraine, if left untreated can last for hours or days. Also, during the migraine changes can take place in blood flow to the area of the brain responsible for vision (occipital lobe and visual cortex). These throbbing headaches can produce visual symptoms even without a noticeable headache.

What Are Ocular Migraine Symptoms?

Individuals who suffer from these throbbing headaches endure several symptoms. Most notably, they will see a small, enlarging blind spot ( scotoma ) in your central vision with bright, flickering lights (scintillations ) or a shimmering wavy line ( metamorphopsia ) inside the blind spot. This blind spot usually gets larger and may move across your field of vision. This migraine can last 20 to 30 minutes, but usually occurs for just a few minutes. (OM)are for the most part harmless, painless and don’t cause generally any permanent visual or brain damage. Also, they don’t require any treatment.

What To Do If An Ocular Migraine Occurs?

A visit to the doctor may hold little to no answers in terms of how to possibly treat (OM). The reason for this is because the triggers that set off these migraines are still poorly understood. The vision symptoms in conjunction with painless (OM)are not related directly to the eyes.
