Genital herpes (GH) is a (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). If you have had sex, then you were put at risk for contracting this very prevalent disease! In the limited circle in which I dwell in there are approximately 30 couples. The vast majority or about 90% of them engage in sexual activity. What is (GH)?

(GH) is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus’s type 1 or type 2? Most cases of (GH) are caused by the HSV-2. Also, most cases, the individual with the outbreak has little to no awareness of the disease. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or even months after the first, but in most cases its less severe and shorter than the first outbreak.

The number of outbreaks decreases over time even though the infection can stay in the body indefinitely. Research estimates that in the U.S at least 45 million people ages 12 and older or one out of 5 adolescents and adults have had a genital HSV infection. How Its Contracted?

HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be found in and released from the sores that the viruses cause, but are also released between outbreaks from skin that doesn’t appear to have a soar. In most cases a person can only get HSV-2 infection during sexual contact with someone who has genital HSV-2 infection. The transmission can occur from an infected partner who doesn’t have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected.

HSV 1 can cause genital herpes, but it more commonly causes infections of the lips and mouth or the so-called “fever blisters”. HSV-1 infection of the genitalia can be caused by genital or oral genital contact with a person who is infected with HSV-1.

Signs And Symptoms

The vast majority of people infected with HSV-2 aren’t even aware they have it. If the signs and symptoms occur during the first outbreak they can be pronounced. Usually the first outbreak occurs within a few weeks of the virus being transmitted and hopefully the sores heal with a few weeks to a month. A second crop of sores, and flu like symptoms including swollen glands and fever usually occur during the first episode.

Individuals who have the first outbreak of (GH) can also expect to have several (around 5) outbreaks within a 12-month period.

Complications of (GH)

-Recurrent painful genitals in many adults

-Can be severe in people with suppressed immune systems

-Can cause psychological distress in people who know they’re infected

-Can lead to potentially fatal infections in babies

-Herpes may also play a role in the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, Herpes can make more people susceptible to HIV infection and it can make HIV infected individuals more infectious

What Are Possible Ways To Treat (GH)

There is currently no treatment that can actually cure herpes, but antiviral medications can prevent and shorten outbreaks during the time the person takes the medication.
