Breast-feeding or (BF) helps to establish an even stronger bond between a mother and her baby. It is also one of the most beneficial and natural acts a mother can do for her child. Besides the health benefits of the milk, it also provides a priceless, intimate time the mother has with her baby. This section provides: health benefits to the mom, what are the benefits to babies, and the benefits to the society, environment and overall.

What are the health benefits to the mom who (BF)?

-There’s a reduced risk of (anemia) a condition in which there is relatively lower levels of iron in the blood.

-Develops a special emotional relationship and bonding with mom and baby.

-There’s a reduced risk of breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers.

-Aids the mother’s body to return to its pre pregnancy state quicker. Promotes weight loss ½ of calories needed to manufacture milk is pulled from fat stores; it can burn from 500 to 1500 calories per day.

-Protection against gastroenteritis and necrotizing entercolitis

-There’s a reduction of childhood diabetes.

-The children receive an all around complete optimal mix of nutrients and antibodies.

-Reduction in chronic constipation, stomach upsets and incidences of colic.

-Protection against allergies, eczema, asthma and the severity of allergic disease.

-Protection against ear infections, pneumonia, kidney infections, septicemia (blood poisoning), and respiratory illnesses.

-Also fewer incidences of vomiting and diarrhea in the U.S (20 to 25 million episodes of diarrhea occur in children under the age of 5, which results in over 200,000 hospitalizations and 400 to 500 deaths in the U.S.

-Breast feeding also promotes enhanced speech, straighter teeth, facial structure development and enhances vision

-Its also been proven that breast fed infants develop higher IQ’s and have improved brain and nervous system development. There’s also and IQ advantage of 10 to 12 points studied at ages 8, 12 through 18. There are specific proteins in human milk that promote brain development.

What are the benefits to the environment and society?

-There’s a reduction in insurance premiums for both parents and employers.

-A reduction in tax burden on communities and governments to ensure children are properly fed.

-Reduction in missed work due to a child illness.

-Breast feeding can reduce global pollution by decreasing the use of resources and energy to process, produce, distribute, package and dispose of materials created by the manufacture and use of artificial baby milk.

-Breast-feeding also reduces the cost of healthcare by promoting healthier mother’s and children. If all the WIC babies in the U.S were breast-fed the economic savings would be astronomical. In 1993 90,000 babies were hospitalized for RSV at a cost of 450 million dollars.

What are other benefits of Breast-feeding?

-Breast-feeding on average saves the mom about 7 hours a week off their feet.

-The mom can get more rest than formula fed babies.

-Breast-fed babies smell good, the spit ups don’t smell or stain and poopie diapers aren’t offensive and many more.

There is mo mistake about how vitally important it is for a mother to nurse her baby. The health, environmental, and bonding benefits are all essential to the proper development of a baby.
