NEWEST UPDATED RESEARCH ON ABDOMINAL MIGRAINE

ABDOMINAL MIGRAINE

I think it is important to include Abdominal Migraine(AM) on my site because of the extent of this health problem. Every year there are thousands of reported cases of (AM), most notably among children. I will include on this site credible information on the definition, symptoms and also the diagnosis of (AM).

What is an ( AM )?

( AM ) is not well understood and an often ignored cause of abdominal pain in millions of individuals worldwide especially in children. Another name for ( AM ) is Tummy Migraine, Non-headache migraine and may be associated closely with cyclic vomiting syndrome ( CVS ). ( CVS ) is when people experience bouts or cycles of severe nausea and vomiting that last for hours or even days and alternate with longer periods of no symptoms. ( CVS ) occurs mostly in children, but the disorder can affect adults, too. ( CVS ) has no known cause. Each episode is similar to the previous ones.

An ( AM ) is a completely different health problem than recurrent abdominal pain syndrome or ( RBPS ). ( RAPS ) occurs between ten to fifteen percent of school age children. As a result, their illness has caused them to miss at least three days of school in a 3month period. There are some cases of recurrent abdominal pain in school age children that can be linked to stressful situation or event in their lives.

There is evidence that indicates abdominal migraines originated from an area of the brain called area post-trema. It is probably due to a disordered intestinal motility triggered by abnormal brain waves.

What are the symptoms of Abdominal Migraine?

. Recurrent attacks of central abdominal pain. Usually around the umbilicus or belly button, that lasts for several hours with associated nausea, one-sided headaches and vomiting.

. You may become pale and the pulse may be difficult to feel, they may also become flushed.

. Like those with a migraine, there may be a preceding aura of visual disturbance, numbness, flashing lights, tingling sensation around the mouth, slurred speech, paralysis and even muscle weakness.

. Associated dislike or sensitivity to light and sound too, the pain most commonly starts in the morning.

. The pain typically lasts for about 2-6 hours and can re-surface for the next three to four days with no symptoms during these intervals.

What is the diagnosis of Abdominal Migraine?

There aren’t any tests done recently that can be performed to diagnose ( AM ). The diagnosis is suspected from a careful history and some form of imaging scan may shed some light on the likelihood of symptoms possibly being due to abdominal migraine. Next, there is usually a family history of migraines, often found in the mother. A test called Visual Evoked Response or ( VER ), consists of a red an white flash light may give further indication of the presence of abdominal migraine in a child. As a result, if you have an (AM) the display shows a fast waveform response to flashing light than a normal child.
